Kabalana to Ahangama: Chasing Reef Breaks Past Midigama

The road between Kabalana and Ahangama covers barely six kilometres, but it strings together some of the most varied surf on Sri Lanka's south coast. Most visitors fly past it on their way to Weligama or Midigama, which is exactly why it rewards a slower look.

Kabalana itself is home to the reef break known simply as Ranga's Right, a fast, hollow wave that peels off a shallow coral shelf and suits intermediate to advanced surfers who can read a quick takeoff. A short paddle or tuk-tuk ride further along, Malimbu offers a gentler beach and reef combination, more forgiving for those still building confidence, with fewer boards in the lineup even in peak season.

Closer to Ahangama, the break at Kabalana Point connects into what locals call the CoCo's stretch, a mellow, longer ride that works well on smaller swells and is a good option when the more famous breaks further west are overcrowded or blown out.

Getting there and timing it right

A tuk-tuk from Weligama or Midigama takes twenty to thirty minutes, and the coastal road makes for pleasant stops along the way. Dawn patrol is worth the early alarm, both for glassy conditions and for having these breaks largely to yourself.

What to bring

Reef shoes matter here more than on sandier beaches further east, since several of these breaks sit close to shallow coral. A lightweight rash guard also helps against both sun and scrape, given how exposed some sessions can feel at low tide.

This stretch rewards patience over ambition, a good place to slow down and actually watch the water before paddling out.
