Koggala Lake: A Half-Day Escape Near the South Coast

Most travelers on the south coast shuttle between surf breaks and beach bars, never noticing the wide, still expanse of Koggala Lake just inland from the coastal road between Ahangama and Koggala town. It's an easy half-day detour, and one of the few places on this coast where the landscape feels genuinely different from beach and palm.

The lake is dotted with small islands, some inhabited, some given over entirely to cinnamon cultivation. Boatmen based near the lake's edge run trips out to these islands, where you can walk through cinnamon groves and watch peeling and drying done much as it has been for generations. Kanduboda Temple, built on one of the larger islands, is worth the stop for its quiet setting alone, reachable only by water.

Further along the shoreline, the lake narrows into mangrove channels where kingfishers and monitor lizards are common sights, and the water turns a deep, tannin-stained brown under the tree cover. Birdlife here is genuinely rich, especially at dawn.

Stilt fishermen and sunset

The stretch of coast near Koggala is also one of the more reliable spots to see Sri Lanka's iconic stilt fishermen, perched on their narrow poles just offshore. Early morning or late afternoon light works best for both fishing activity and photographs.

Getting there

Koggala Lake sits just off the main Galle-Matara road, easily reached by tuk-tuk or local bus from Ahangama, Midigama or Habaraduwa. Boat trips are arranged informally at the lakeside, with no need to book ahead.
